Paddy's career began at Rycotewood College in Oxfordshire where he achieved a Diploma in Furniture Design and Craftsmanship. After leaving college he spent 25 years working for one of the countries foremost contemporary furniture makers, leading a team of young talented craftsmen. Paddy established Howlett Furniture in 2005, working from The Roseneath Workshops he designs and makes a wide range of furniture for private and corporate clients.
The Roseneath Workshops are set in the heart of rural Leicestershire only a few minutes drive from the M1 and M6 motorways. Paddy shares the workshop with a friend who is also a furniture maker and together they have converted the former agricultural buildings into a spacious well-equipped and creative working environment.
Paddy has a unique passion for wood with a deep understanding of its decorative and structural qualities. His designs are often inspired by everyday objects he sees around him, from nature, architecture and engineering.
The majority of timber he uses is selected from Whitmores, a local timberyard, that specialise in English and continental hardwoods from legal and sustainable sources. Recently Paddy has been successfully cutting and seasoning some local English Oak himself, adding provenance to the timber your furniture is made from. He also works in a range of other materials including decorative veneers, metal, glass, leather, fabric and stone.
Paddy endeavours to run his workshop with a responsible attitude towards the environment. Wherever possible materials are recycled, off-cuts are used for heating on his wood -burning stove and shavings are used as litter for local poultry.
